The Giving Ground: Crossroads’ Clothing & Skills Exchange

28 April 2026

This past Saturday, we had the absolute joy of welcoming 157 people (!!) to our very first large community event, a clothing and skills exchange built around the values that define Crossroads: reciprocity, mutual exchange, and the belief that everyone has something to offer.

Participants arrived with gently-used clothes, accessories, and small personal items, slowly building what turned into a shared “community closet.” From there, people browsed through the collection, discovering little treasures to take home and give their wardrobes a fresh twist.

While the clothing exchange was rooted in ideas of sustainability and a more circular way of consuming fashion, it really was something more than that. It turned into a space for connection. Again and again, we overheard moments of pure joy when someone found a new home for an item they had brought. People shared stories about where a piece came from, who gave it to them, or why they loved it. It felt less like swapping clothes and more like passing along tiny pieces of personal history.

At the same time, over in the “idea box,” Kostas, our Project Implementation Support member and trained employability counselor, was guiding small groups through reflections on their own skills and talents. He encouraged participants to think about how they might share those skills with others in the community, not just professionally, but in ways that feel meaningful and enjoyable.

The goal wasn’t just to list what people are trained to do, but to help them reconnect with what they want to offer. Over 25 people joined in, sharing skills like CV creation, coding support, dog walking, supporting people with disabilities, dietary coaching, babysitting, and more.

These offers were then opened up to everyone at the event, giving attendees the chance to take part in a one-time, free skill-sharing experience. It added another layer to the evening, one where exchange went beyond objects and into time, care, and knowledge.

The night itself flowed with bright energy and a lot of excitement, helped along by delicious Arabic snacks and drinks from Baghdad Market and falafel from Laziza. At one point, the room even turned into a mini dance floor when a guest spontaneously offered a salsa performance. No planning, just pure joy.

The most meaningful part of the night was watching connections form. You could see it in the smiles, in the conversations, and in that tiny moment of “wow” when someone realized they had contributed something to others.

That kind of energy is hard to put into words. One attendee said it best: “I can’t believe you’re able to create this atmosphere that feels like a big hug for all of these people.”

And that’s really what Crossroads is about. Everyone brings something. Everyone can take something. And everyone has the chance to connect with someone new.

We’d like to give a big thank you to Law to Impact for hosting us in their beautiful space, to our incredible volunteers who made everything run so smoothly, and to Baghdad Market and Laziza for generously sponsoring the food and drinks.

We’re already looking forward to the next time we get to bring everyone together like this.

With lots of love,

Crossroad’s First Community-Led Activities!

22 April 2026

Over the past few weeks, something exciting was happening at Crossroads: our first community-led activities were imagined, designed, and implemented by three of our inspiring community members.

These activities represent the core idea of Crossroads: to act as a foundation where ordinary people have the chance to come together, bring their dreams to life, and share their skills and talents with others, creating a ripple effect that brightens the spirit of all those involved, and encourages others to do the same.

Activity 1: Weaving Workshop

Following the brainstorming process during our last Crossroads Circle, Barbara, a member of our community, visual artist, educator, and passionate weaver, dreamed up an idea to host a beginners weaving workshop, giving attendees the opportunity to learn how to create something unique with their own two hands.

Around a shared table, the weaving process unfolded: exploring materials, listening to Barbara explain the process with patience and care, finding creative color patterns, and enjoying time together.

Even though the final creations were nothing short of beautiful, the focus was never on the outcome, but on what becomes possible when people create alongside one another.

As one participant shared after the event, “today our hearts were filled with joy again.”

A big thank you goes to Fractcal Academy for their willingness to host our event in their creative space.

Activity 2: Movie Nights!

Two members of our community, Kostas and Layla, opened their doors and invited others to their homes to share films that are personally meaningful to them. In one home, we had the chance to see an independent American film, and in the other, a Syrian drama.

What could have been a simple movie night unfolded into something far more layered. As the films ended, conversations naturally filled the space, with stories, emotions, and perspectives surfacing and creating a shared ground for people to reflect and connect through each other’s experiences.

For Layla, the evening became something even deeper. It wasn’t just about watching a film, but about reconnecting with a sense of home and passing it on. Sitting alongside her daughter and friends, she found herself revisiting memories of a Syria filled with warmth, belonging, and everyday togetherness. Through the film, and through the conversations that followed, she was able to share not just images, but a feeling, a lived memory of what “home” means beyond what is often seen.

As she described it, it felt like stepping into a kind of “time capsule,” where stories, scents, and emotions resurfaced, and where something pure could be shared across generations.

In those moments, the homes themselves became small crossroads of their own, spaces where memory, identity, and connection met through the simple act of watching a film together.

What this means for us

Our first community-led gatherings are not isolated events, but are a reflection of how Crossroads was designed to be: led by the community, for the community.

These moments show that when people have space to bring ideas to life, meaning grows. Memories return, stories are shared, and a sense of belonging forms. They live on in new connections and in subtle changes in how we see one another.

Crossroads exists to be the space where what lives within people has an opportunity to become real, be shared, and continue unfolding.

With gratitude to everyone who brought these first moments to life,

"The Art of Co-Creation"- Crossroads Circle #2

30 March 2026

This Saturday, 25 people came together for our second Crossroads Circle, each bringing their own stories, thoughts, and inner landscapes to our shared table.

Over the course of the afternoon, what began as a group of individuals transformed into a shared space of connection, intention, and collective energy.

This gathering was designed as an open environment for expression and co-creation. Our aim was simple but meaningful: to truly listen, to reflect, and to explore how our personal experiences can become the foundation for initiatives that matter, both to us and to the wider community. It didn’t take long to feel that something genuine was unfolding.

We began with a question that invited honesty: What are you carrying within you today?

People responded not only through words, but through creative expression. Using colors, symbols, and language, they translated their inner states into something visible and shareable.

Across these reflections, common threads emerged:

  • being in a state of transition

  • emotional and mental fatigue

  • the search for small moments of light within everyday challenges

  • a deep desire for meaningful connections beyond the surface-level

From there, we shifted the focus outwards with the question

"What do you feel ready to offer?"

At this point, the atmosphere changed. Personal reflection began to evolve into possibility. Recognizing shared experiences sparked imagination and openness.

Ideas began to take shape around:

  • learning and exchanging creative skills

  • offering support to people in need

  • creating spaces where people can connect more deeply through stories, memories, and shared experiences.

Then came the turning point: the time to put it all in action.

Participants formed smaller groups and started shaping these ideas into something tangible. With a practical mindset, they explored key questions:

  • What type of initiative do we want to create?

  • Why does it matter?

  • Where could an activity take place?

  • What do we need to make it happen?

  • Who takes on which role?

Screenshot 2026-03-30 at 2.43.00 PM.png

What emerged were not just ideas, but early-stage initiatives, grounded in real needs and ready to be developed further by the community itself.

As the circle came to a close, there was a quiet but powerful sense of momentum. Something had already begun.

For Crossroads, this gathering marked another step forward, from sharing to shaping, and from connection to collective action.

We arrived as individuals.
We left with a shared direction, and with ideas that are ready to be brought to life.

We’ll be sharing more about these initiatives very soon. Stay tuned.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who showed up and contributed their presence, openness, and energy.

Special thanks to LOUD: art & inclusion for hosting us and for being part of the conversation around what it truly means to create inclusive spaces for all.

With much love and appreciation,
Effie, Claire, & Eirini

Our First Crossroads Circle!

5 March 2026

On Sunday, March 1st, we had the honor of welcoming 23 amazing and inspiring individuals from all different walks of life to our very first "Crossroads Circle."

Our first session was focused on coming together and sharing our own understandings of what community means. We expressed our current needs and desires and came up with ideas about what each of us could offer back to both the greater community and to one another. By doing this, we were able to introduce the ethos of Crossroads Community in an interactive, safe, and collective way.

Our meeting wasn't just a meeting. Ιt was a moment of true community spirit and engagement. We spoke openly, recognizing that each of us has a role to play, a voice, and a meaningful contribution to make. It was living proof that when people from all different backgrounds come together with pure intentions and a shared vision for a brighter future, community ceases to be just a lofty ideal, but comes alive.

By the end of the session, we had heard the unique ideas and thoughts of each and every person in attendance.

Here are some of the highlights:

What does community mean to us?

  • Belonging, support, understanding, safety, shared values, broadening our horizons, sharing of information, skills, and ideas, acceptance, respect, hope, giving back to improve our society, & feeling spontaneous

What do we need at the moment?

  • Friendship, emotional support, professional guidance, expression through art, fun, time in nature, connection, socialization and belonging, & new places to meet

What could we offer to one another?

  • Arts and crafts workshops, group discussions on social issues and health, support with professional development, Greek and foreign language classes, supporting those in need, cooking together, theater and music workshops, discussions on books and films, organized outings in the city, personal styling advice, and more!

For us, this was a very important first step as we use the feedback gathered as part of mapping the needs, sentiments, and peer-to-peer offerings of our local community. The ideas and thoughts that were shared will be used to co-create our next steps in a participatory and engaging way, ensuring that everyone's voice is heard, and our path forward is laid together.

We would like to send a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us so far in these early days. Whether by attending our first event, sharing our vision with others, offering space and resources, or simply believing in what we’re building, your support truly means everything as we start our journey together.

A special thanks goes to Naomi for very kindly providing the space for our first meeting!

Stay tuned for updates on what's next!

With lots of love & gratitude,

Effie, Claire, & Eirini
