frequently asked questions

1 / Tell me more about your project

You know how people often feel isolated or like they don't have a real community where they belong? Crossroads creates spaces where people actually connect - not as 'clients' or 'beneficiaries,' but as equals. We bring together people from different backgrounds to share skills, have real conversations, and take action on things that matter to them. It's less about us running programs and more about creating the conditions for people to support each other and build something together

2 / So what does that actually look like?

For example, someone might come to one of our meetings just feeling lonely and wanting to meet people. They join a conversation circle, mention that they have a skill like cooking or gardening or discover others care about the same local issues that they do.

One person suggests doing something together, maybe planting a community garden, a meal exchange, or advocating for a park cleanup. Before you know it, they've gone from strangers to collaborators creating real change. It's organic - we just create the space for it to happen.

3 / Who comes?

Anyone looking for genuine connection and community - women, men, locals, migrants, young people, older folks. The diversity is actually the point. When people from different backgrounds come together as equals, that's where the magic happens.

4 / What problem are you trying to solve?

Social isolation and disconnection. So many people feel like they don't have a real community or a place where they belong and can contribute. Traditional organizations often create dependency or treat people as clients. We're building something different, where people connect as equals, support each other, and create change together.

5 / Where do you meet?

We're still in the early stages of setting up. Right now, we're working on securing a permanent space in Thessaloniki, but we're starting with pop-up gatherings and partnering with existing venues, creating “crossroads” all around the city. The goal is to have a dedicated community space that's accessible and welcoming.

6 / When are your events/meetings?

We're just getting started, so we're building the schedule based on what the community wants. Some things will be regular, like weekly discussion circles or skill exchanges, and others will be organized by participants around specific interests or needs. The idea is that it's responsive, not rigid.

7 / Sounds idealistic. Does this actually work?

Fair question! There's actually a lot of evidence that peer-to-peer, community-led approaches are more sustainable and effective than top-down service delivery. We're building on models that have worked elsewhere - time banks, community organizing, mutual aid networks. Plus, the need is real, people want genuine connection and agency. We're just creating the conditions for it.

8 / I'm interested - how can I help?

That's great! A few ways: Come to a gathering and bring your presence and ideas. Share a skill or facilitate something you're passionate about. Help us spread the word. Connect us with others who might be interested or with potential partners. Or just stay in touch—we're building this together, and we need people's input and energy.

9 / Do you need funding/donations?

Yes! We're a nonprofit just getting started, so we're seeking grants and donations. We also value in-kind support, space, materials, and connections. If you know of funding opportunities or want to contribute, we'd love to talk.
